Aberdeen Beach

Aberdeen beach is probably the best all round beach in Scotland, so if you are going to travel to visit, start with here. The beach runs north from the mouth of the River Dee in the middle of Aberdeen for about 5km, an enormous stretch of sand that is supported along its length by wooden groynes. These give the beach its character; they prevent the loss of the sand allowing the sand dunes to build up behind the beach and create the great sand banks that build up between them in the water. There are thus various surfing peaks along the length of the beach, but being supported by the groynes they don't shift, creating predictable peaks of clean plunging waves. As long as care is taken with the groynes this beach is excellent for all levels of surfers with some classic waves to be had, especially on the river mouths.

Despite its location, when on the beach it's not immediately apparent that you are in the centre of a city. However this changes when you leave the beach, as this beach isn't just about fun in the water. If you have any energy left or if there are kids that you need to keep entertained, then Aberdeen has it all right next to the beach; an ice rink, leisure centre, golf, amusements, fairs, bingo, crazy golf, swimming pool - its got the lot. Plus there are one or two classic bars for a cheeky Malt or three after the session.
