Aill na Searrach (Aileen

Aill na Searrach has stood facing into the storming waters of the North Atlantic for several millenia - but it is suddenly the hot topic of conversation. Why? Because it is the new frontier on the big wave surfing circuit. Early in 2008 several Irish and British surfers took advantage of the perfect winter storm conditions to ride tow into and ride the biggest waves ever ridden in Europe, firmly cementing 'Aileen's' in surfing folklore.

Apart from the gargantuan waves, this is an incredible location, with the Cliffs of Mohir both sounding and looking like something from Lord of the Rings. The views on a clear day can be stupendous and the sheer scale and rugged beauty of this spot have to be seen to be believed.

Thankfully the geography acts as a natural barrier to wanna-be's paddling out to annihalation in the monstrous surf and it is a break best left to surfing pioneers.
