Belhaven Bay is a fantastic expanse of exposed sand guaranteed to catch the swell that travels down the eastern coast of Scotland. It's really accessible, really safe with no rips or submerged hazards and consequently an ideal spot for novices to catch handfuls of waves to hone their technique in an un-crowded line up. There are peaks either side of the river mouth, although the better ones are to the south of the river, which produce mellow, easy going, spilling waves.
Beyond the river mouth there are myriads of individual shifting peaks along the length of the beach. It has abundant wildlife and is a very clean and tranquil spot so is ideal for family groups on a day out to the beach. There are well-maintained facilities just behind the beach and ample, free parking spaces. You'll just feel the stress disappear as you catch your first wave!
