Clonea Strand is an enormous beach over 5 kilometres long, which in conjunction with its geography, gives it an almost chameleonic character that changes along its length. At the left, eastern end the beach is quite rugged with low rocky cliffs providing the participation between the green fields behind and the beach below them. It is accessed via a small car park of only 30 spaces, which is unsuitable for SUVs or larger vehicles, guaranteeing that it is never crowded.

Small fingers of rock run out from the base of cliffs creating little beaches within a beach. The sand all along Clonea Strand is fine golden sand and it is at its best and least crowded in the middle section.

At the far right side at the western end the beach takes on a very different character, which is imparted from the fact that this end has far better parking and facilities and more direct access.

The water quality here is good, which is matched by the amount of swell it receives and the waves it produces. The beach is wide enough to accommodate a significant number of surfers and still enable anyone to catch their own waves on the shifting beach breaks that work across the whole beach and the full range of the tide. Kite surfers and wind surfers will also love this wide expanse of a beach.
