Hayle beach is Cornwall's best river mouth surf break but it takes a bit of finding! Once you find the beach road running out from the north of Hayle town (which may take a while) and follow its winding route up to the back of the dunes, you will find yourself at a huge expanse of sand. There is a multitude of shifting peaks across the beach, which work from low through to high tide, but the most consistent is the peak at the river mouth.
The right hand side of the river mouth produces waves that peel up the river but this can be affected by strong winds, as it is very exposed. Bear in mind that after heavy rain the water quality can deteriorate due to surface run off from the town, so avoid taking large drinks of the sea! The quality of the waves can attract crowds when the surf is going off and with its stunning location is well worth a visit.
There is a great pub overlooking the beach and with its large grassed terrace it is a great place to unwind after a busy day at the beach.
