Portwrinkle is the last beach at the western end of Whitsand Bay and it sits sheltered under a high set of cliffs. The beach is joins the huge sweeping crescent of Whitsand Bay's golden sand at low tide, but as the tide comes in the beach starts to separate up as small bays. Care needs to be taken on spring tides that you don't become cut off from the main entry point below Portwrinkle village. As the beach is so large it doesn't become too crowded, despite its popularity.
Under the right conditions Portwrinkle produces good surf from low through to high tide, although care should be taken by all surfers at high tide due to several rocks that become submerged and hidden from view. This beach comes into its own with a strong southwesterly swell and can produce some great waves when other beaches are blown out.
The best activities out of the water are just up the road in Plymouth, which has some of Devon's best nightlife, leisure and history throughout the City, and in Dartmoor National Park.
