Creating your listing on Surfing Genie

Existing Listings
There are already a number of listings in the database but once you create your own listing these will be removed to avoid duplication. At this point you will then have user access to your listing 24 hours a day, all year round and will be able to upload photos and change text as you wish.

Number of listings
Each listing in the database should represent an individual business, club, charity or event. We do check all listings before they go up, to ensure nothing that may offend is posted, either as text or photograph. Multiple listings are allowed where each represents an individual location – for example RNLI Lifeboat Stations, Pubs belonging to a chain or a series of Surf competitions. Please don’t try to create 100’s of listings for you business!

Title
Choosing your title is important as we will generate the URL (web address) on Surfing Genie using this (surfinggenie.com/hotel/yourtitlename.html) It should be unique but does not need to have a description of what it is e.g. Bag End is fine, Bag End B&B in Hobbiton is not necessary. Google and other Search Engines read the listing category and will know that it is a B&B, your post code and beach link will identify its location via the technology.

Pictures
Pictures paint a thousand words and high quality photography is one of the key principles to Surfing Genie. Do include a high quality main photo that encapsulates what your listing is about and use the other two to perhaps show more; the bedrooms of a B&B, the dining room of a hotel or a class in action of a Surf School. Finally the file size is limited because the larger the image the slower the download time to a users computer, so try to balance resolution/ file size against download time. 100KB is the maximum per photo – the home page main photos are less than 50kb each, so it is possible to get good quality with small file size.

Beach
When you create your listing you can link it to the beach in the Surfing Genie database that is closest or most appropriate. If you are located 50 metres behind a lovely beach – link to it! If you are located 5 miles inland and have 3 to choose from, select the one that is likely to be busiest or most appropriate for your customers. If your local beach isn’t in the directory please tell us and we will create the beach page for you (see below). Contact Us for more information.

Post Code
It is vital that you include your post code on your listing page as this will create your location on the mapping system and is what generates directions for users travelling to you.

Text
The amount of effort you dedicate to writing your listing text will be directly proportional to the number of users who visit your listing. See the SEO guide on what text Search Engines rate favourably. Some of the basics are:

1. Spell check and grammar check your text before you publish it.
2. The first 90 characters will show on the search results of Surfing Genie so ensure they are clear, concise and a good advert for your listing.
3. The first 150 characters will be used as the metadata to create the summary on the results of any external search engines (Google etc) so again ensure that they are clear, concise and a good advert for your listing.
4. Consider structuring the page with an introduction for the above two points and then sections on different factors of your listing – e.g. for a hotel, rooms, food, prices.
5. Use the full page - search engines do crawl a lot further into the text than what they show in summary search results.
