Newquay - Towan Beach

Newquay's Towan beach is a golden horseshoe of sand that sits just north of the fishing harbour and is the first of four beaches on the edge of Newquay Bay. Towan is accessed by a steep flight of steps down from the cliff and is over looked by the most isolated house in Newquay, sat on top of a pillar of rock, with its own connecting footbridge to the mainland. At high tide the beach becomes a small crescent of sand, but at low tide the beach opens up and connects with each of the other four beaches to the north, forming a huge strip onto which the surf breaks.

The surf is just as consistent as Fistral beach but due to the size of the headland will keep producing rideable waves when everywhere else is blown out by storm swell. The main peak is to the left of the beach, where the swell gets pushed up onto the harbour wall. This is an ideal beach for novices to practice catching some quality waves and honing their technique, before graduating onto the more challenging Fistral.

The beach caters for all levels of surfing ability and there are a plethora of surf schools, manned by some of the high-class surfers that this world-class surfing location has spawned. On top of this is the incredible nightlife; Newquay has a multitude of bars and clubs to explore routinely packed with hundreds of local and visiting beach goers, so if you are after a 24-hour surfing experience look no further than the surfing Mecca of the UK!
