Porthleven is the best reef break in England and draws the crowds when it is working; both in and out of the water - it's not unusual to see internationally renowned surfers in the water here and a large crowd watching. The reef is located 200m round from the right hand side of the seawall that leads into the harbour. The reef will work in any big swell but really starts hitting the high gears in winter south-westerly swells. Low tide can be risky if there is not much water covering the reef and high tide can pick up some backwash from the rocks under the cliffs, but that's picking holes in a fantastic wave.
On the big clean days you will be able to see the best of the UK's surfers tackle this famous right and it's not unusual to see a broken board or two. If you are after less demanding waves the sprawling golden beach to the left of the harbour entrance will keep you entertained with beach breaks and there is a particularly good left hand peak that runs away from the seawall.
There is just as much quality and variety out of the water with superb pubs, restaurants and arts & craft shops around the harbour and into the village. One of Cornwall's best spots.
