Saltburn by the Sea

Saltburn by the Sea is a fantastic beach with the jewel in the crown being the superb Saltburn pier, which stands centre stage in the middle of the beach. Saltburn beach is made of a fine golden sand that sweeps in a curve from the headland at the southern end, past the pier and off as a long thin strip of sand to Redcar in the north. It has a real variety of peaks and waves for surfers of all abilities. The highlight is the point at the south end of the beach, which can produce high quality barrelling right-handers peeling off the reef at low tide. Inside this is another peak just up the beach, which can produce both lefts and rights. Finally there are shifting beach breaks all up the length of the beach, but which undoubtedly are most popular by the pier where the sandbanks push the swell up.

The pier gives the beach an obvious character, which makes surfing here great fun for any level of ability. Parking is limited with only 50 or so spaces next to the pier and a few more by The Ship pub at the southern end. If its flat or you want a break from the beach, Saltburn is a good seaside resort town with lots to explore, including the North Yorkshire Moors which are only just inland from here.
