Spanish Point, which is just south of Miltown Malbay is a great surfing spot with an interesting history. In 1588 the Spanish Armada were sailing through the waters off County Clare when a large storm blew up, wrecking many off the ships on the shallow reefs along this stretch of coast. The sailors who survived the storm were washed ashore here, hence its name today. The rather hard-nosed local governor immediately executed those that made it ashore - thankfully travellers receive a much friendlier reception today!
The reefs are still there and produce high quality and varied waves. There are three main reef, inner, middle and outer, which work depending on the state of the tide and the swell. There is also a good beach break ensuring that there are surfable waves for all levels of ability.
