Surf contest to draw 'hundreds'

BBC Online, Sunday 23 March 2008.

A surfing competition in the far north of Scotland is expected to draw 400 people, organisers have said.
The O'Neill Highland Open will be held near Thurso, Caithness, from 23-30 April.

It will include the Sea Odyssey scheme, which will aim to give local children a better understanding of marine habitats.

Dubbed the world's coldest professional surfing contest, it will be held in Caithness for a third year running.

A spokesman said: "We like the unbeaten path and to explore new territories for our events and show the world that there's more to surfing than turquoise-blue, warm waters.

"Riding perfect barrels in front of big cliffdrops and ancient castles at pretty much the end of the world is a special experience."
