Tynemouth Bay

Tynmouth beach is the home of the best waves along this stretch of coast and is the most consistent break. Better known as Longsands, it is a beautiful fine golden sand beach tucked below a ridge of high sand dunes with two rocky headlands at each end. Once you are on the beach you would never guess just how close it is to a major urban centre. The northerly of the two headlands has a good left point break and there is a right hand beach break just inside the southern headland, creating waves that are suitable for all levels of surfers.

Tynemouth has the added benefit of working on almost all swells and at all stages of the tide, so you won't have to wait long for the surf to be up. If the conditions are right (there's a large swell pushing into the Tyne river mouth) then Black Middens, a reef just off the rivermouth, may be working. This can be an outstanding wave, its only drawback being it's at the mouth of a working river, and you may have to occasionally make way for the odd ship!

The beach is very easy to find with the main A193 running parallel with the beach just inland. There is plenty of parking and good facilities just behind the beach. With the bright lights of Tynemouth and Newcastle a short step away this is one of Britain's best urban beaches.
